Andrea was born in 1982 in Louisville, Kentucky. She was smart, sharp-witted, and driven the eldest of three sisters in a close-knit but sometimes stormy family. With a marketing degree from the University of Louisville, she landed a good job as a health analyst at Humana. But like so many others, Andrea hit hard times. She lost her job, then her car, and eventually found herself living with her family again, caught between rebuilding and breaking down.

Her mother, Cheryl Knabel, and her father, Mike Knabel, both tried to support her but family tensions ran high, especially between Andrea and her youngest sister, Sarah.

Before Andrea became a missing person, she was helping find them. As a volunteer with the nonprofit group Missing in America (MIA), Andrea was tireless joining searches, comforting families, digging through clues. She was known for her compassion and determination, going “undercover” on cases and investigating cold leads with the same intensity she brought to protecting her two young sons.

One of the people she met through this work was Tracy Leonard, a seasoned private investigator who was impressed by Andrea’s raw talent and dedication. 📅 The Night She Disappeared

August 12–13, 2019. That night, Andrea had a falling out with her sister Sarah and Sarah’s fiancé, Ethan, at their mother’s house on Chickadee Road in Louisville. She left to seek treatment at the ER for an infection. Ethan drove her, and she took a Lyft home after.

But when she got back? The doors were locked. So Andrea, phone in hand, walked to her sister Erin’s house about a mile away. Erin let her in, but tensions flared again. Around 1:30 a.m., Andrea left, presumably to walk back to Chickadee Road. Her last phone activity was logged at 1:38 a.m. Her Google account pinged near her mother’s house at 1:54 a.m.

After that silence.

  • No confirmed sightings.
  • No Andrea.

Her phone went offline by 6:30 a.m. and has never been found.

🕵️‍♂️ Tracy Leonard’s Role

In the aftermath, Tracy Leonard became a central figure. Though not hired formally by the family, he volunteered countless hours, resources, and manpower launching searches across multiple counties. He and his team from Loc8tors spent over $100,000 following leads and analyzing digital footprints.

Mike Knabel praised him as someone who “selflessly volunteered to find my daughter.” Even after Tracy served time in 2022 for unrelated tax issues (operating his PI firm in cash), the family stood by him. His dedication to Andrea never wavered.

🧩 Theories and Speculation

  • Was she harmed by someone close to her?
    Tensions with her sister Sarah and Ethan have fueled rumors. They were the last people Andrea may have seen. They gave unclear statements and did not participate in search efforts. Still, police have not named them as suspects.

In late 2022, human remains were found in rural Kentucky. For months, the family waited in agony. But in 2023, forensic testing confirmed it wasn’t Andrea.
