📍Vanished Without a Trace: The Life and Disappearance of Andrea Knabel

By The Sassy Gazette | Investigative Spotlight Series

“She searched for the missing and then became one of them.”

In a world overflowing with headlines, Andrea Michelle Knabel’s story is one that deserves not to be forgotten. A devoted mother, fierce friend, and passionate advocate for the missing, Andrea wasn’t just another face on a flyer. She was someone who helped others find their way home until she herself vanished into the night.

👩‍🦰 Who Was Andrea Knabel?

Andrea was born in 1982 in Louisville, Kentucky. She was smart, sharp-witted, and driven the eldest of three sisters in a close-knit but sometimes stormy family. With a marketing degree from the University of Louisville, she landed a good job as a health analyst at Humana. But like so many others, Andrea hit hard times. She lost her job, then her car, and eventually found herself living with her family again, caught between rebuilding and breaking down.

Her mother, Cheryl Knabel, and her father, Mike Knabel, both tried to support her but family tensions ran high, especially between Andrea and her youngest sister, Sarah.

🕵️‍♀️ The Searcher

Before Andrea became a missing person, she was helping find them. As a volunteer with the nonprofit group Missing in America (MIA), Andrea was tireless joining searches, comforting families, digging through clues. She was known for her compassion and determination, going “undercover” on cases and investigating cold leads with the same intensity she brought to protecting her two young sons.

One of the people she met through this work was Tracy Leonard, a seasoned private investigator who was impressed by Andrea’s raw talent and dedication. The two formed a strong professional bond working cases side by side. Tracy would later become one of the lead investigators on Andrea’s own case when the unthinkable happened.

📅 The Night She Disappeared

August 12–13, 2019. That night, Andrea had a falling out with her sister Sarah and Sarah’s fiancé, Ethan, at their mother’s house on Chickadee Road in Louisville. She left to seek treatment at the ER for an infection. Ethan drove her, and she took a Lyft home after.

But when she got back? The doors were locked. So Andrea, phone in hand, walked to her sister Erin’s house about a mile away. Erin let her in, but tensions flared again. Around 1:30 a.m., Andrea left, presumably to walk back to Chickadee Road. Her last phone activity was logged at 1:38 a.m. Her Google account pinged near her mother’s house at 1:54 a.m.

After that silence.

  • No texts.
  • No calls.
  • No confirmed sightings.
  • No Andrea.

Her phone went offline by 6:30 a.m. and has never been found.

🕵️‍♂️ Tracy Leonard’s Role

In the aftermath, Tracy Leonard became a central figure. Though not hired formally by the family, he volunteered countless hours, resources, and manpower launching searches across multiple counties. He and his team from Loc8tors spent over $100,000 following leads and analyzing digital footprints.

Mike Knabel praised him as someone who “selflessly volunteered to find my daughter.” Even after Tracy served time in 2022 for unrelated tax issues (operating his PI firm in cash), the family stood by him. His dedication to Andrea never wavered.

🧩 Theories and Speculation

  • Was she harmed by someone close to her?
Tensions with her sister Sarah and Ethan have fueled rumors. They were the last people Andrea may have seen. They gave unclear statements and did not participate in search efforts. Still, police have not named them as suspects.
  • Was it retaliation for her work with Missing in America?
Some believe she crossed paths with someone dangerous. But Andrea wasn’t working an active case at the time, and police don’t think her volunteer work played a role.
  • Was she trafficked?
An anonymous caller claimed Andrea was drugged and abducted. But the claim was unverifiable. Trafficking remains a haunting possibility though one with no concrete evidence.
  • Did drugs play a role?
Andrea had reportedly struggled with substance use in the months before her disappearance. Did she leave with the wrong crowd? Was she harmed by someone in the drug world? There are whispers, but no proof.
  • Did she leave voluntarily?
Her family finds this the least likely. Andrea loved her sons and would never walk away. Her bank accounts and phone show zero activity. There’s no trace. No goodbye.

📺 Media Attention and the “Finding Andrea” Series

In 2021, Investigation Discovery released “Finding Andrea”, a four-part docuseries examining her case. While it brought renewed interest, it also stirred controversy. The Knabel family criticized the show for playing up drama and focusing too much on unverified rumors.

Despite its flaws, the series kept Andrea’s name circulating  and that matters.

🔦 A Case That’s Still Open

Andrea’s family never stopped looking. Her father Mike, sister Erin, and her Missing in America friends have chased leads through back alleys, strip malls, and trap houses. They’ve faced scammers, fake psychics, and dead ends.

In late 2022, human remains were found in rural Kentucky. For months, the family waited in agony. But in 2023, forensic testing confirmed it wasn’t Andrea.

So, the question still burns:
Where is Andrea Knabel?

The Unsolved Death of Matthew Hoy: Fire, Silence, and a Community That Knows

Little Dickies, The Fire on Bunker Hill: The Unsolved Death of Matthew Hoy By RICHIE D MOWREY for The Sassy Gazette (Dicking Around With Richie A True Crime Feed) For more than three decades, Matthew Hoy’s death has sat in one of the most maddening corners of American true crime: a case with haunting facts, persistent community knowledge, and evidence that refuses to behave like an accident, yet still no official homicide ruling.
